“HOW LONG DO YOU THINK Gwen will need to stay here?”

Gwen heard Robbie’s question but it sounded like it was coming from a long way away. She remained perfectly still, in the hope that if he didn’t know she was awake she might learn something.

She didn’t recognize the next voice. “That’s hard to say, Mr. Osteen. I’ll have a better idea as soon as I talk to her. I wouldn’t worry too much about her mental health, though. It’s not that unusual to live in a state of denial when we can’t face a disturbing truth.”

She almost laughed, but that would have given away the fact she was no longer asleep. It was really was getting old, pretending to be the grieving mother. She would have killed Toby sooner if she had been able to come up with a way of doing so without getting caught. It had been a stroke of genius to think of leaving him in the car all day, to die of a heat stroke. Almost no one blamed her afterwards, and those who had had quickly forgiven her, especially when they saw just how much the baby’s death had affected her mental health.

All she had to do now was just pretend for a few more weeks that she believed Toby was still alive. Of course, it was getting harder to do so, what with him crying all of the time these days. He really was more trouble dead than he had ever been alive. Toby was going to be so angry that Robbie had taken away all of his belongings. Good. It was about time Robbie started taking care of the brat. Toby really was such a pain in the ass now that he was dead.

Gwen tried to pretend she was still asleep, but opened her eyes when the crying began. Was there no rest for the weary? The little bastard had found her. Unable to stand the nonstop crying a second longer, she sat up. “Are you just going to stand there, or are you going to help me with the baby?”
